Evan Ratliff is an award-winning freelance journalist and the co-author of Safe: The Race to Protect Ourselves in a Newly Dangerous World (HarperCollins, 2005), about the role of science and technology in homeland security. He is a contributing editor for Wired magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The New Yorker, the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Outside, Discover, Men’s Journal, ReadyMade and many other publications. He has reported from Russia, Cameroon, Bangladesh, Brazil, and other locales abroad, and writes about eclectic characters and topics ranging from science and technology, to the environment, to terrorism and transnational crime. A former fellow at the International Reporting Project and the Japan Foreign Press Center, his reporting and humor writing have also appeared in various anthologies, including The Best of Technology Writing 2006. He has a degree in environmental science and policy from Duke University, and lives in San Francisco.
